Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 31, 2026

Lawzenge (“Lawzenge”, “we”, “us”) is operated by Nicholas Jacob in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. This policy explains what personal information we collect through lawzenge.com (the “Site”), why we collect it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and your choices. We handle personal information under British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and, where it applies, Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

Words like “Member”, “Court and Crown User”, “User Content” and the plan names have the same meaning as in the Lawzenge User Agreement.

1. Who is responsible (privacy officer)

Nicholas Jacob is accountable for Lawzenge’s compliance with this policy.

Contact: Nick Jacob, nick@nicholasjacob.ca, or by mail to Lawzenge, 2909C 30th Ave, Vernon, BC V1T 2B8.

2. What we collect

When you register as a Member

  • Account details: username, email address, first and last name, cell phone number, password (stored only as a one-way hash), the plan you chose, and any promotional code you used.
  • Professional details you choose to give: your role (lawyer, articled student, paralegal or law student), law society or student number, principal or firm, employer or firm, law school, and your nearest courthouse city (province and city). Lawzenge does not check these details with any law society or school. Other Members see them as you entered them.
  • Agreement acceptance record: your name, username, email, plan, date and time, IP address, browser information, the version of the User Agreement you accepted, a SHA-256 fingerprint of its text, and a copy of that text. We also record when you confirmed your email address.

When you register as a Court and Crown User

  • Your name, email address, role, court or office (if you give it), account activity, the date and time you confirmed your email, and a record of your acceptance of the Court and Crown User Agreement (date and time, IP address, browser information, and the version and text you accepted).

When you use the Site

  • User Content: for example Agency Connector appearances and calendar entries, judge information, arguments, precedents, documents, video links, Message Board questions and answers, profile information and photos, and private messages between Members.
  • AI Researcher: your questions, the answers, the jurisdiction you chose, and the date of your acceptance of the AI Researcher disclaimer (see section 5).
  • Video Database: for Free Members, which videos you opened each month, so we can apply the Free plan’s one-video-a-month limit.
  • Affidavit Maker: information you type may be processed in your browser or on our servers. Enter only what you need.
  • Payments: we do not see or store your full card number. Payments are handled by Stripe (see section 5). We keep your plan, subscription status and payment history, including amounts, dates and the last digits or brand of the card as shown by Stripe.
  • Security and technical data: IP address, browser and device information, login attempts and security events, recorded by our security tools (Wordfence) and our host’s server logs.
  • Site statistics: we use Independent Analytics, which runs on our own server, sets no tracking cookies, and doesn’t share data with advertisers. It records pages viewed, referring site, approximate country, and device and browser type.
  • Contact form and email: whatever you send us, such as your name, email and message.

We do not use advertising trackers, Google Analytics or social-media pixels.

3. Why we use it

We use personal information to:

  • create and run your account, confirm your email address, and provide the features of your plan
  • show your profile and User Content to other users as described in section 4
  • process payments, free trials and promotional codes, and prevent the same person from repeatedly using a trial or code
  • send account, billing and service emails (for example confirmations, receipts, password resets, and notices of changes to the User Agreement)
  • keep the Site secure, prevent abuse and investigate misuse
  • keep records we need for legal, accounting and dispute purposes, including proof of what you agreed to
  • understand how the Site is used, using the cookieless statistics described above, and improve it

We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising. We send marketing emails only with your consent, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

4. Who can see your information on the Site

  • Other Members can see the profile details and User Content you choose to make visible, as described on the Site. For example, Lawyer Members can see the Member Directory and profiles, and contact details shown there.
  • Agency Connector: Lawyer Members can see appearances and the contact details shown with them. Free Members whose nearest courthouse city matches an appearance can see that appearance, including the cell phone and email shown with it.
  • Court and Crown Users (Crown counsel, judges and court staff who register with a government or court email address) have view-only access to Agency Connector appearances, the name shown with them, and judge information. They are not shown Members’ contact details, and their own details are not shown to Members or listed in the Member Directory.
  • Private messages can be seen by you and the other people in the conversation. They are stored on our server.
  • AI Researcher history can only be seen by you on the Site.

You are responsible for the information you choose to make visible. Do not post client names or other information that could identify a client or another person, or anything privileged.

5. Service providers and transfers outside Canada

We use these service providers. They may process personal information outside Canada, including in the United States, where it may be accessed by courts, law enforcement and national security authorities under the laws of that country.

  • Hosting and email: the Site, its database, stored files and our @lawzenge.com email are hosted by Bluehost (Newfold Digital) on servers in the United States. Some of our email is also handled by Google (Gmail).
  • Payments: Stripe processes card payments and keeps your customer and payment details under its own privacy policy. Stripe may set cookies on payment pages for fraud prevention.
  • AI Researcher: when you ask a question, we send the question, earlier questions and answers in the same thread, the jurisdiction you chose, and short excerpts from related Argument Database entries to our AI provider, xAI, which processes them outside Canada (currently in the United States) to generate the answer. We send an anonymous identifier, not your name or email address, and we ask xAI not to store the conversation. We do not control how a third party handles information. Never enter client names or other identifying information.
  • Security: Wordfence (Defiant Inc.) provides firewall and login security and may check IP addresses against threat lists.

These providers may use the information only to provide their services to us.

We may also disclose personal information when the law requires or allows it (for example under a court order or to investigate fraud or a breach of our agreements), or to a buyer or successor if the Site is sold or transferred, subject to this policy.

6. Cookies

We use only the cookies the Site needs to work:

  • Login cookies (WordPress wordpress_logged_in_*, wordpress_sec_*, wordpress_test_cookie) keep you signed in.
  • Security cookies (Wordfence, for example wfwaf-authcookie-*) are set for logged-in users and help block attacks.
  • Payment cookies (Stripe, for example __stripe_mid and __stripe_sid) are set on payment pages for fraud prevention.

Our statistics tool does not use cookies. You can block cookies in your browser, but you will not be able to sign in.

7. How long we keep it

  • Account and profile: for as long as you have an account. When you delete your profile from your Account page, your profile and User Content are deleted, as described in User Agreement s.27.1. This includes appearances, arguments, precedents, videos, uploaded files, Message Board posts, private conversations and AI Researcher history.
  • AI Researcher questions and answers: you can delete them at any time. They are deleted automatically after 12 months, or when you delete your profile.
  • Kept after deletion: we keep the records we need for legal, accounting, security and record-keeping purposes. These include payment history, the record of your acceptance of the User Agreement, records of free-trial and promotional code use (which may include a one-way hash of your email address), and judge information you added to the Agency Connector (which is shared information). We keep these for as long as needed for those purposes, generally up to 7 years.
  • Security logs: kept for up to 12 months.
  • Backups: deleted information may remain in backups for up to 30 days until they are overwritten.
  • Downloads: content other Members already downloaded may remain with them.

8. Safeguards

We protect personal information with reasonable safeguards for its sensitivity. These include HTTPS encryption, hashed passwords, two-factor authentication for administrator accounts, a web application firewall, limited administrator access, and access controls on features and plans. No system is completely secure. If a privacy breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify affected people and the Privacy Commissioner as the law requires.

9. Your choices and rights

  • You can view and correct most of your information in your Account and profile pages, and you can delete your profile at any time.
  • You can ask us for access to the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or withdraw consent (which may mean we can no longer provide the Site to you). Write to the privacy contact in section 1 (Nick Jacob, nick@nicholasjacob.ca). We will respond within 30 days, as PIPA requires.
  • If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia (www.oipc.bc.ca) or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (www.priv.gc.ca).

10. Children

The Site is for professionals and adults. It is not intended for anyone under 19, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. We will post the new version here with a new effective date, and for significant changes we will notify Members by email or on the Site.
